5 Best Places to Eat in New Caney

The best part of traveling is trying food from different areas. It’s nice to be able to experience something you aren’t normally able to and, we’re here to help you out in that department. Here’s our list of the 5 best places to eat in New Caney (and the area.)

Fish Tales – New Caney

This hometown seafood joint is one of the best in the area. The staff is so friendly and helpful, and the amount of food you get for the price is perfect. You can’t have seafood without hushpuppies, and this place has the best recipe! If someone in your group doesn’t like seafood, they also have some grilled steaks and salads they are just as good. Our recommendation is the catfish and the PoBoys.

Italiano’s – Kingwood

This Farm-to-Table, family style restaurant in Kingwood is one of the most popular around town. The warm and intimate ambiance is perfect for a quiet night out, and the traditional style food is impeccable. They even offer NYC-style pies! They’re lunch options are convenient for people on their lunch break or just passing through, and the prices are reasonable.

Chez Nous – Humble

This restaurant is a little more on the pricey side, but definitely worth the dollars. Awarded TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence, this quaint little French/American place never disappoints.

Taste of Texas – Houston

When people think of Texas and food, the first thing that usually comes to mind is steak; a nice, big, juicy steak. Well, Taste of Texas has capitalized on that notion and given the people what they want! The service is wonderful and friendly, and while the price is a little high, the food and experience is worth every penny. Not to mention, you can’t put a price on a really great cut of meat.

Peli Peli – Houston

This Texas steakhouse gives you a new twist on tradition. Considered a fusion restaurant, this exotic and interesting take on Texas food is just what you need to feel adventurous. We suggest trying the Sticky Toffee Pudding. While this place prides its self on its exciting, indigenous flavors, don’t worry, you won’t find hippo or warthog on the menu. They’re not that exotic.

Labor Day Festivities!

With our location being so close to several towns, we’ve gathered some information for you on what’s going on around here this Labor Day weekend.

Houston Comic Con

If Comic Con is something you’ve never experienced, you’re missing out. This event use to get a bad wrap since it’s devoted to comic books; however, it’s a huge display of what’s hot in pop culture right now. You may not think it’s something that you’d enjoy taking the kids to (because you know they’d LOVE it) but we can assure you, you’ll have a good time, too. There are several amazing costumes that you’ll see, various celebrities – some of which may also be in costume – and there’s often times teasers for new releases that you can only hear at the event! But, the best part about this Houston Comic Con is the Star Wars Fan Experience. Surprise your family with the ultimate gift: tickets to this year’s Comic Con. They’ll be thanking you for years to come!

Ghost Tours of Texas

These tours are highly rated and an incredibly fun experience, especially with Halloween right around the corner! They’re spooky – and educational with the history of these locations – and the perfect tour to keep the family interested and entertained. Within walking distance, you’ll see various locations that are believed to house the supernatural. You might even catch a ghost on camera!

Lake Limo Yacht Charter

The lake is a perfect place to spend your Labor Day weekend. So many people usually do, and barbecue with all of their friends and family. Why don’t you take it one step further, be the awesome person that you are, and rent one of these luxurious yachts for everyone to enjoy? Guess who will be the hero of the weekend? You! That’s who! You can also get tickets to several different types of experiences if you don’t want to rent the entire yacht. They have Casino dinners and concert cruises, so you can definitely find something within your budget.

Get Back in Touch with Nature

Most people go camping to get away from it all. To get back in touch with nature, and themselves. We are in the perfect location for just that. While we are close to Houston, we are tucked far enough away in the Texas pines that you won’t have to worry about the sounds of the city keeping you up.

Mercer Botanic Gardens

Mercer Botanic Gardens is the perfect place for you to enjoy nature and get to see a lot of it up close and personal. Ride your bike along the trails, or schedule a tour so you can stop and smell all of the roses! The history of the botanic gardens is quite interesting, and the garden is one of the locals favorite things to experience.

Hiking, Biking and Canoeing in the Area

There’s several different locations around us for one to experience the great gifts that nature has to offer. Peach Creek Trail at Lake Houston Park is one of the most beautiful east Texas trails, and is 4.7 miles out and back. It’s a moderate trail that is typically used for hiking and mountain biking. It’s accessible all year, so you have plenty of time to check it out!

Jesse H jones Park and Nature Center Trail offers a river for you to kayak or canoe down, and it’s absolutely breathtaking! The trails at this park are all levels, and don’t forget to pack bug spray!

Stay with and get back in touch with your self. Rest, relax, and stop to smell the roses. Sometimes, it’s nice to forget about life outside of the trees and cool, river breeze. Book with us now!

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

Root, Root, Root for the Home Team!

Major League Baseball is one of America’s greatest past times. Even if you aren’t a huge fan of the ball game its self, you can still have a great time going to a park. There’s nothing like sitting in those stadium seats, socializing with your friends, with the smell of fresh hot dogs and beer caressing your nose. It’s so much more exciting when you’re there, rather than just watching it on TV. The sport gets a bad wrap for being boring because that’s how most people watch it now, on their televisions at home. But you can’t beat the experience you get watching the ball game at the ball park!

Houston Astros

Home Run

Home Run

Being so close to Houston, several of us enjoy catching a ball game when we can. The Houston Astros will be playing Tampa Bay tomorrow at Minute Maid Park, followed by the Dodgers on the 21st/22nd, and it’s going to be a good couple of games. The Astros are putting up a fight this year in the American League (AL), and have made it to the top in their division! They have gone from one of the worst teams in the last few years, to first place in the AL Western Division, with a 65-55 win/loss record. They’ve definitely come from behind in their 3 years in the AL to take the League by storm this year, and surprised many of their naysayers and fans alike.

The Ball Game at Minute Maid Park

Minute Maid Park is so much more than just a ball park. They host a slew of events, and there are some great restaurants with awesome happy hours located inside! You can even plan a tour of the park, or to host a birthday party for the baseball lover in your family! Saint Arnold’s is actually looking for Happy Hour Live Music talent right now, so if you have an awesome band ready to play some gigs, contact them and show them what you’ve got! How cool would it be to play at Minute Maid Park?!

We are so close to so much action here at Forest Retreat! Book with us now and join in on the fun! We can’t wait to see you.

East Montgomery Country Fair and Rodeo

Are you a red blooded Texan, through and through? Do you love BBQ, rodeos, cowboy boots, and cattle drives? Then you’re sure to have a great time at the East Montgomery country Fair and Rodeo (you’ll have a good time even if you aren’t a red blooded Texan!)

East Montgomery Country Fair and Rodeo

Rodeo festivities begin September 11th at 8 PM and go through Sunday, the 13th. The BBQ Cook-off will also begin Friday and the winner will be announced Saturday around 5:30. There will be all kinds of livestock events going throughout that next week, along with a youth dance and buyer’s dinner later in the week

Every year, we enjoy putting together our Youth Dance, for the kids who work so hard in this competition. This year, the dance will be held on Friday, the 18th, at 8:00 PM. This will be the perfect way to end another great Rodeo Event!

East Montgomery Country Fair’s main objective is to provide scholarly support for the kids of the community, offering opportunities to earn scholarships through organized activities. FFA and 4-H programs require much training and discipline, which ideally helps to prepare youth for college, and life. They are, after all, our future!

Our Favorite Things to Do in the Area

Finding things to do when traveling can sometimes be very overwhelming when planning your stay with us. Let us help you out with that! We know all the cool and interesting spots, and while some might be considered tourist attractions, we guarantee you’ll enjoy every minute of your vacation!

We’re only 30 miles way from the big city of Houston, as we mentioned in our previous blog post, so here’s a few things we like to do in that area. Zoos and aquariums are always a big hit with the entire family (no matter how much your 13-year-old might fight the idea in the beginning.)

Houston Zoo & Downtown Aquarium

The Houston Zoo and the Downtown Aquarium both have 4 star ratings on TripAdvisor and always a big hit with travelers. You can’t go wrong with a day full of cute and cuddle animals, and intriguing marine life.

See what’s happening at the Zoo this month, and get ready for a Snow Day on August 22nd! This winter wonderland is back by popular demand, and will showcase two snow fields, and kids will be encouraged to make snowmen and snow angels! They’ll have the opportunity to cool off from the Texas heat, until it melts the snow away. Admission to this event is included in your regular zoo admission, so don’t miss out on this fun snow day!

The Aquarium has a lot going on too, but one of our favorite things to do there is the Shipwreck exhibit. You will have the opportunity to step back in time, seeing the inside of the sunken hull of a 17th century Spanish galleon. While you’re there, embrace all the beautiful marine life you are getting to gaze out upon, in it’s natural habitat.

Forest Retreat

Book your stay with us now, and be right in the middle of all the action that east Texas has to offer. Just 30 miles outside of Houston, and only 45 miles away from the Trinity Bay, you won’t run out of things to do. We can’t wait to show you what our little area has to offer! Our Favorite Things To Do Around Here

Grand Texas Theme Park

This Texas theme park will keep you and your family entertained for hours! There are so many things to do, including equestrian trails, a petting zoo, a living museum, and so much more! But a theme park wouldn’t be a theme park without some rides. Grand Texas has roller coaster and water rides too, to keep you cool in this Texas heat!

We are a little over 20 minutes away from Houston, a great city with something always going on. This Saturday, the Redneck Country Club will be hosting a tribute to the 80’s (only the best decade of music yet!) There’s always a good show going on at the House of Blues, and various comedy nights to keep you entertained. One of the most prized attractions is the Houston Space Center, where you can view space artifacts and exhibits at the museum, take the NASA tram tour, and see what’s in the Space Center Plaza.
